WIC Prenatal Breastfeeding Education

All pregnant WIC participants receive breastfeeding education at their first prenatal WIC appointment, regardless of how they intend to feed their baby. This includes:

  • Individual counseling and education on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.
  • A list of local contacts to call in case of breastfeeding questions.
  • “WIC Food Packages for Moms and Infants” - a brochure about the benefits of breastfeeding and the enhanced food packages that breastfeeding women receive. To learn how the WIC Food Packages encourage breastfeeding, click here.
  • A Prenatal Education Backpack containing a breastfeeding book, a 2-part DVD (To Baby with Love: Overcoming Breastfeeding Barriers and The Comfortable Latch: A Guide to Successful Breastfeeding), a breastfeeding encouragement and support brochure for their partner and their mother, quick reference breastfeeding information cards, a congratulations on your pregnancy/why WIC wants you to breastfeed letter, and a burp cloth with a breastfeeding message imprinted on it.

In addition to the items listed above, WIC participants receive breastfeeding education and encouragement through group classes, individual lessons, online video lessons, posters, and support groups.
